NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Hit-and-runs have become an all-too-common tragedy in Nashville this summer.
One of the latest happened on Sept. 9 in Old Hickory, when 33-year-old James Sellars of Hendersonville was killed while stopped at a red light.
Police said Sellars was on his motorcycle on Old Hickory Boulevard when a silver Mercedes struck him from behind. The impact pushed his bike through the intersection and into a traffic pole.
"It's baffling because you can literally just hit someone and leave the scene of an accident. It's not okay," James' brother, Zack Sellars, said.
Family members described James as outgoing and kind, someone who had recently been baptized and was focused on family.
"My brother was very funny," Zack said. "He just turned his life over to God four weeks ago. He was doing really well. He was a family man. He loved my mother. That was his best friend. He was just a great guy at all times."
Zack Sellars said his family is pushing for more traffic cameras to help investigators in cases like his brother's.
"At the red light where my brother was, there were no cameras. So now we're hoping residents in the area might have Ring doorbell footage because without it, we're stuck," he said.
Days after the crash, investigators said the driver came forward. Police charged 23-year-old Jordyn Walker with felony vehicular homicide by reckless conduct, evidence tampering, leaving the scene of a deadly crash and failure to render aid.
Her bond was set at $81,000.
News 2 has previously reported on five pedestrian hit-and-run crashes across Nashville within the past week:
- On Sept. 11, a pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Fourth Avenue South and Korean Veterans Boulevard around 3:20 a.m. Days later, the MNPD announced that he died from his injuries. A Murfreesboro man fled the scene, but was later arrested in connection with the crash.
- Also on Sept. 11, a pedestrian died after being struck while crossing Haywood Lane near Hopedale Drive at about 8:20 p.m. Police are still searching for the driver of the Dodge Charger believed to be involved in the crash.
- In the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 13, a woman was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of 16th Avenue and Broadway. She was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and, as of publication, her condition is not known. The vehicle fled the scene, and police did not add any information about charges against the driver.
- At 6:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, a 13-year-old was hit by a white Ford Fusion at the intersection of Shelby Avenue and S 5th Street. The teen was transported to Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt with a possibly broken leg. Police did not add any information about charges against the driver.
- Most recently, a 67-year-old was struck on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the intersection of Dr. D.B. Todd Jr. Boulevard and 17th Avenue North. He later died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center from his injuries, and police are still searching for the driver who struck him.
- In addition to the pedestrian hit-and-run crashes, a motorcyclist was killed after being struck by a silver Mercedes at the intersection of Old Hickory Boulevard and Pitts Avenue on Sept. 9. Though the driver initially fled the scene, they were eventually charged with felony vehicular homicide and other charges.
