GALLATIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Mixed opinions sparked from an ordinance dictating where liquor stores can be built in Gallatin.
Multiple Gallatin residents spoke before the city council at a meeting this week.
The ordinance would remove the distance requirement between existing and approved retail liquor stores, and it places no limitations on stores’ proximity to churches or schools.
Several Gallatin residents spoke up on both sides of the issue. People who spoke in support said it’s difficult to find nearby liquor store options in the district, especially since local liquor stores, like the Red Carpet, have been moved out of District 5. They also argued the change would create jobs, bring in tax revenue and even decrease DUIs in the community.
“By making this adjustment, the council would open the doors for new businesses to serve District 5, create jobs and bring tax revenue back to our community,” Gallatin resident Raj Patel said.
Those opposed to the ordinance, however, said it's morally wrong and places schools and churches in an uncomfortable position.
Key-Stewart Church Senior Pastor Sean Cook spoke at the meeting and said liquor stores disproportionately affect neighborhoods where families are already struggling. And when alcohol outlets are concentrated closer to schools and churches, there is a high risk of crime, addiction and poverty, rooted deep in communities.
“Moving liquor stores closer to our schools and churches sends the wrong message to the next generation," Cook said. "It tells them the profit outweighs their protection, that their health and their safety and their spiritual development are negotiable. If we must consider distance requirements, then let us strengthen them, not weaken them.”
Ultimately, the Gallatin City Council voted to postpone the ordinance indefinitely.
