CHAPEL HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — This week, officials dedicated an accessible greenway in one Middle Tennessee state park.
On Friday, a 1.5-mile multi-use greenway with scenic views of Henry Horton State Park and access to the Duck River was dedicated. The trail highlights native grass fields, pollinator gardens, a historic rock wall and the gravesite of the park's namesake: Governor Henry Horton.
Not only is the trail accessible for all park users, but its porous surface utilizes 125,000 pounds of crumb rubber — or the equivalent of 6,220 passenger tires sourced from scrap tires across Tennessee.
“This is quite a week for Henry Horton State Park,” Greer Tidwell, Deputy Commissioner of Conservation for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, said. “The new greenway is part of our commitment to accessibility throughout all Tennessee State Parks, and we invite everyone to come and enjoy these new features.”
The event kicked off the Duck River Outdoor Expo, which is an event dedicated to education about the river as well as its conservation. On Saturday, there will be a Run Duck Run event as well as the main outdoor expo event from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. On Sunday, there will be a Hammer Drop Bike Event and a Group Bike Ride in the park.
