Description

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — East Nashville will soon be getting improvements to a problematic highway interchange—a project six years in the making.

It's not a rare sight to see major backups along Ellington Parkway in East Nashville. One major culprit of the traffic issues is the interchange of Ellington and Douglas Avenue, according to Metro Councilmember Sean Parker (District 5).

Parker told News 2 it's been his mission to improve this interchange since he was elected in 2019 due to the number of crashes that take place there. He said it's an awkward traffic pattern, but he's hoping the change will calm things down and promote better traffic flow.

The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure will soon install a new traffic signal at the interchange and improve the striping on the road.

"It's amazing how long and how much effort some of these relatively small things can take," Parker told News 2. "One of my supporters asked me shortly after the election, 'I know you just got elected, but have you looked at the crash data here? There's always broken glass and it's always backed up to Ellington,' and I said, 'Sure, I'll take a look at that.' Lots of meetings, reminding people about how bad it was. That's what it takes, is just constant effort sometimes."

Parker said the project will likely be finished in the spring of 2026.
