NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — This heat can be dangerous for pets, too.
A Nashville couple is facing serious charges after police said they left their dog outside in the heat, and it died.
Dearick Pinkston and Lakendra Moore are facing aggravated animal cruelty charges.
Metro Nashville police said their dog died after they left it on their apartment balcony during Saturday's extreme heat.
Investigators said the dog didn't have access to water or shade, and it tried to chew through a fence to escape.
"They need shade, protection from the elements and a place to cool off," Williamson County Animal Shelter Director Ondrea Johnson said.
"One of the things you need to make sure is that you're providing fresh water," she said. "If you don't want to sit in the sun all day, your pet is wearing a fur coat."
Johnson also said to test the pavement before taking them on a walk. She said if it's too hot for people, it's too hot for a pet.
Johnson said sadly, situations like the case in Nashville happen every year.
She said symptoms of overheating include panting and disorientation.
