GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A rookie Millersville officer exercised some good instincts backing up a veteran Goodlettsville officer Tuesday evening, allowing the duo to pursue and apprehend a convicted felon.

A man with a dangerous criminal history reportedly ran from the Goodlettsville Police Department near Interstate 65 and the Millersville exit on Tuesday, May 13.

Officer Dakota Chamberlin with the Millersville Police Department was on his way to work when he saw the man run across the road, but he didn't initially find that odd. However, when he saw Goodlettsville Lt. Joe Waldron with blue lights on, he flipped around and backed up the veteran officer.

Body camera footage shows the moment that both officers went into the creek along Louisville Highway.

Officials identified the subject of the pursuit as Joshua Cloyd, 33, who had multiple warrants for his arrest. This long-time felon has a criminal history that includes thefts and aggravated robbery.

Cloyd was also the focus of a Metro Nashville Police Department investigation in March 2024 for allegedly preying on intoxicated patrons along Lower Broadway, stealing their wallets and cellphones.

"So right then, you've only been a cop two months, but what are you thinking right then?" News 2's Andy Cordan asked.

"I'm thinking that a partner needs help. I didn't see anyone else that was there to back up, and the way that his car kind of jumped the curb, I kind of figured that it was pretty serious," Chamberlin explained. "He was looking left and right, trying to locate where the suspect had ran, and I just said, 'Hey, what are we doing?' He said, 'We're chasing this guy; he's got warrants.' I said, 'Well I'm with you.'"

That's when the grizzled Goodlettsville veteran and the rookie Millersville officer spotted the felon and gave chase for about 50 yards. After a brief pursuit, Cloyd surrendered, laying face down on the muddy bank.

Waldron handcuffed the suspect and then Chamberlin walked him out of the creek to the other Goodlettsville officers who had arrived at the scene.

Chamberlin told News 2 he was glad he could come to a fellow officer's aid: "In the moment, I'm just happy that there's a partner that has backup. I would just hope that if I was out there on my own and there was a cop that was out there, regardless of the jurisdiction, he would notice that a brother needed help."

Meanwhile, Cloyd is back in jail, charged with probation violation, theft of property, and aggravated robbery. This time, he's being held without bond.

He's set to appear in court on Tuesday, May 20 for Goodlettsville's charges and then due back on Friday, May 23 for the probation violation.

News 2 checked with the clerk's office and obtained paperwork that indicates Cloyd pleaded guilty to all the charges from 2024. He was sentenced to five years.

Based on court records, he served from May 21, 2024, until Nov. 7, 2024. The rest of the sentence was suspended by Judge Angelita Blackshear Dalton.

News 2 has asked the judge for a statement, but we have yet to hear back.
