NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Antioch residents who have fought against a plan that would have put townhomes in their backyards, arguing that other issues need to be fixed before the units could come.
The plan would rezone the area for single-family residents and incorporate multi-family units. Those units would go in the nearly four acres of private greenspace behind the homes off Maxwell Road. The developer attempted to make them affordable houses — priced between $325- and $400,000.
Antioch residents said not only have they been dealing with safety issues from overcrowding, but they're struggling with traffic and school crowding and they want to see a plan for these issues before it gets worse.
"Right now, a school bus goes down Maxwell Road you've got to pull off the road so the bus can pass you just because the road is not big enough," Smith said. "We have already put in over 800 houses on our street. I'm not saying this is a no — I'm saying right now with the property and the way it is, it's not safe."
They said if construction were to move forward, it would wipe out the 3.8 acres of green space — just feet away from some neighbors’ houses. Commissioners said while new construction usually causes environmental impact, they want to be sure the units will be sustained on the road.
The Metro Planning Commission voted to defer the plan until the developer finds a way to keep the single-family units consistent on Maxwell Road and create a better safeguard for the units in the area.
