NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A controversial development proposed for Nashville's Antioch neighborhood is moving forward after receiving approval from the Metro Planning Commission.
The development would rezone a portion of Maxwell Road, meaning that the roadway could soon have 36 new single-family homes despite a petition gaining more than 400 signatures against the plan. In addition to the single-family homes, the proposal also calls for new townhomes to be built upon nearly four acres of greenspace behind Maxwell Road.
The developer had been asked by the Metro Planning Commission to reconsider the number of units within the project. Ultimately, the developer lowered the total from 40 units to 36.
A community meeting for Metro's eighth district was held Monday night where, among other things, residents spoke about the project. While some neighbors feel traffic, road conditions and schools over capacity are still a problem, others feel like they might need to accommodate to the new change.
"Please understand that the Southeast corner of Antioch doesn't need more units. However, in working with our councilman Mr. Harrell, we're not completely opposed," concerned Antioch resident Carlene Castleman said. "We're just opposed to the extreme density of the of the plan."
