LEBANON, Tenn. (WKRN) — For more than three decades students in Lebanon and Wilson County have been able to receive free shoes before they go back to school, thanks to a partnership between community members and local civic organizations.
The 33rd annual Dewaal Shoe Giveaway is set for 4-6 p.m. Friday, July 25, at the parking lot at 219 East Market St., behind the First Baptist Church facilities, according to city officials.
According to John Dewaal, the giveaway has been associated with First Baptist Church throughout its entire history with his family.
Started by Becky Dewaal in 1993 with Bertie Alligood, the project began as a way to provide basic items like shoes, socks, and undergarments to students before they returned to the classroom. Their thought process, according to John, was to ensure students felt better about themselves before they returned to school, which would in turn help them approach school with a better attitude and have a better chance at success.
Dewaal and Alligood partnered with The Potters House Ministry in Upton Heights—now operated by the Wilson County Salvation Army—then saw their home church, First Baptist, pitch in financially.
The 2024 giveaway saw more than 400 pairs of new shoes given to about 150 families, thanks to the giveaway's partners, according to Dewaal.
All supplies are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. School children must have a parent or adult with them to receive one free pair of tennis shoes, socks and undergarments, while supplies last.
Food and drinks will also be provided to the families who participate.
