FRANKLIN COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new state park was christened in Middle Tennessee Tuesday.
Head of the Crow State Park spans 4,258 acres in Franklin County, and is part of the former South Cumberland State Park. Tennessee divided South Cumberland's 30,000 acres into three parks to "ensure each area of the park receives the dedicated management, resources, and conservation it deserves."
Savage Gulf was established as a new park in 2022 before Fiery Gizzard, which adopted the name of its nationally recognized trail in 2025.
Head of the Crow State Park contains the headwaters of Crow Creek and offers sprawling with hardwood forests, caves, sinkholes and rare wildlife, according to its website. Park highlights include the Sewanee Natural Bridge, a 50-foot sandstone arch that frames Lost Cove, and Buggytop Cave, one of the largest cave openings in Tennessee.
The park is also home to the extremely rare Painted Tigersnail, found only within a 10-mile radius of the area.
“This park will help drive tourism and the economy in a rural area of our state, and we welcome Tennesseans and visitors alike to enjoy all that Head of the Crow State Park has to offer.” Gov. Bill Lee posted on social media.
