TROUSDALE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Several law enforcement agencies responded to Trousdale Turner Correctional Facility overnight after prison guards were taken hostage.
In a press conference, Trousdale County Sheriff Ray Russell said around 10 p.m. Sunday a riot was reported at the prison. Officials said three guards were locked in the building and taken hostage by inmates.
According to Russell, the inmates took over a control room and released about 100 others to the prison yard. Officials said most of the inmates remained peaceful, though some ignited fires in trash cans. No inmates were able to breach the outer perimeter of the prison.
Approximately 100 deputies from Sumner County, Macon County, Smith County, Wilson County and the Tennessee Highway Patrol responded. Three drones were reportedly used to watch the perimeter of the prison.
Deputies and the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) entered the building and deployed tear gas to push the inmates back into their cells. The guards were successfully freed without the involvement of weapons, officials said. No serious injuries were reported.
Officials are working to complete a head count of all inmates. No additional information was immediately released.
