DICKSON, Tenn. (WKRN) — Inside a small business on Dickson’s Main Street, guests expect relaxation, but some have said there's another presence that does not show up on the books.

Steve Sadler opened Bloom Day Spa in 2016. A year into operations, unusual things began happening.

“Ninety percent of the staff have seen odd things happening,” Sadler said. “He’s not a malevolent spirit by any means. He’s more playful. He loves turning off lights. He moves things around. Other than that, they can just sense a presence.”

The building has a long, turbulent history. More than a century ago, it was a railroad hotel that burned down multiple times.

“There’s been, to my knowledge, 13 fires on this little corner right here since the 1900s,” Sadler said.

One of those fires in 1910 claimed the life of Samuel Mullins, a well-known Nashville man who was staying at the hotel. Local researcher Justin Spurlock said Mullins had recently undergone surgery and was nearly deaf.

“My understanding is the only reason he didn’t get out is because he couldn’t hear the warnings of everybody saying to get out...” Spurlock said. "I think they were under the impression everybody was out, and then they started doing a head count. It's like, 'Where's Mr. Mullins?'"

Historic documents show Mullins died in the blaze, but stories soon surfaced of people spotting a figure kneeling in the ashes, praying. They couldn't tell if it was a real person.

More than 100 years later, some believe Mullins’ spirit never left. Sadler said the presence lingers in certain rooms, especially in the couples’ area at the back of the spa.

“He hangs out in our couples’ room quite a bit and these rooms on the back side,” Sadler said. "...The laundry room light? We don't turn that off. He turns it off all day long. He moves vials and things around in rooms. Every so often, he’ll pound on a wall, just being playful.”

Over time, theories have grown, including whispers about an old burial ground in the area. Whatever the explanation, Sadler said he is not bothered.

“He treats us right," Sadler told News 2. "We treat him right."
