FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise and The Lt. Dan Band performed for hundreds of people at Franklin Parks' "Family Day" event Saturday.

The Gary Sinise Foundation gives back to veterans, first responders, and their families throughout the country and the world.

“I make my living as an actor, and I play music for free, and for the foundation, and for the mission of the foundation, which is to serve and honor the needs of our defenders, our veterans, our first responders... This is something that I do just out of passionate commitment to try to serve and to try to give back and raise some spirits and give everybody a good time,” Sinise told News 2.

One of the nonprofit's methods of service is building mortgage-free homes with smart technology and specialized features for wounded service members. This month, the foundation is on track to build its 100th home.

"If you're missing your your limbs, if you've got severe burns, if you're blinded, if [you've got] traumatic brain injuries, whatever it is, just living in a home that's not specifically designed for you can be problematic, and we try to design these homes with every possible need that a service member who's been wounded would have to make their lives more independent,” Sinise explained.

The Gary Sinise Foundation also provides entertainment to service members through the nonprofit's namesake and The Lt. Dan Band.

“We've done over 600 shows for the military on military bases and military hospitals. We do festivals at military hospitals, we support our first responders, and we're very involved all across the country. We have a lot of people that are working on the foundation mission every single day,” Sinise added.

The Lt. Dan Band plays cover tunes, as well as songs written by Sinise's son, Mac. Coming up on Veterans Day, the band and will be playing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
