CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Friends are remembering a mother and father killed in a shocking crime.

Clarksville police said their own son killed them before taking his own life.

A neighborhood is shaken after a double murder-suicide off Dunbar Cave Road in Clarksville.

The victims are Scott and Kathryn Powers, both in their 70s.

Benjamin Crider lives down the street.

"I noticed all the emergency response vehicles and the tape and people standing in the road," Crider said. "Of course, that got my attention."

Investigators said the Powers' son, 48-year-old Michael Powers, killed them and then himself inside the home the three of them shared.

Police aren't saying how they died or the motive.

"He was a very nice man," Crider said. "He lived in the neighborhood a long time. I met the son, too. He was nice to me at the time. I was doing some pressure washing stuff outside their house."

Scott Powers was a known photographer, according to his friend Johnny Lange.

Lange said he knew there was turmoil between Scott and Michael but never thought it would end in tragedy.

"The world needs more people like Scott and Kat," he said. "They were good people."

According to our partners at Clarksville Now, Michael Powers was convicted of a deadly shooting in 1996.

The conviction was later overturned on a technicality, but he was retried and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
