FRANKLIN, Tenn. WKRN) — Franklin city leaders are working to make a busy road safer.
Tuesday night, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen will vote on a plan to lower the speed limit along Liberty Pike.
The board is honing in on Liberty Pike from Mack Hatcher to the I-65 overpass. It's a highly residential area where leaders say cars need to slow down.
The speed limit currently is 40 mph, but the board wants to reduce it to 35.
Alderman Matt Brown says there have been a number of accidents from Mack Hatcher to the I-65 overpass, but the biggest reason they're doing this is for the safety of pedestrians.
There are several schools in that area, like Centennial High, and a lot of students walk to school, along with other pedestrians.
This is the first step to making Liberty Pike safer, but Brown says they're open to more traffic calming methods if needed.
"I think the speed limit reduction to 35 will be welcomed by neighbors and people going through there, certainly if we see if people aren't following that, we'll get some enforcement out there for sure."
The speed limit would remain 40 from the I-65 overpass to the commercial area of that road.
