NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Library lovers will have to wait even longer to visit the main branch of the Nashville Public Library.

Library officials told News 2 they won't meet their target reopening date of July 29.

The main downtown library branch has been closed since a fire scorched the parking garage next door in June.

Now, library leaders say no reopening date has been set.

Crews are still working hard to restore damage inside the library building.

Most of the damage is on the first floor in the conference center.

Library officials said the restoration is progressing well; no books or collections were damaged—it's infrastructure that needs repairs.

The library said the decision to delay the opening is a matter of safety.

They plan to hire out a third-party safety inspector before letting anyone back inside the building.

However, in all of this, there has been a silver lining.

"Our main location is obviously our flagship location, but the main library is more than a building; it's a community. We have been so grateful to see how that community has stayed together, what we're hearing from staff who are temporarily relocated to some of our nearest locations. They're telling us that they're seeing their frequent customers come over from main," Nashville Public Library Spokesperson Andrea Fanta said.

The parking garage next to the library still remains closed as well.

There is also no word on a reopening date for it.
