SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Dewey, a male red-footed tortoise, has been a beloved fixture at the local library since 2015, and on December 16, staff and visitors gathered to celebrate a special milestone, his 16th birthday.

Dewey was donated to the library in 2015 by a patron, the Rouhotis family, and has since made his home in an enclosure inside the children’s area. From time to time, Dewey is allowed to walk around the children’s section, where he can interact with young visitors and serve as a hands-on educational experience.

The library also plants food specifically for Dewey in its children’s garden. His diet includes fruits like bananas, along with greens such as collard greens and mini cucumbers.

The birthday celebration drew special guests, including Springfield Mayor Buzzy Poole, who attended the ceremony marking Dewey’s 16th birthday.

Library staff say Dewey continues to be a favorite among children and families, bringing both education and smiles to those who visit. For more information on Dewey, or to arrange a meeting with him, click here.
