NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Dates for a special election in Tennessee have been set as Democrats and Republicans continue to make their bid for a position in Washington, D.C.
The special election comes after Congressman Mark Green announced his retirement from public office for an undisclosed private sector job, which he called "too exciting to pass up."
Green's retirement now leaves a seat open in Tennessee's Congressional delegation, more specifically, the 7th Congressional District.
The district includes 14 counties in Middle and West Tennessee, including: Benton, Cheatham, Davidson, Decatur, Dickson, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Montgomery, Perry, Robertson, Stewart, Wayne and Williamson.
According to the Tennessee Secretary of State's Office, Governor Bill Lee has issued an official Writs of Election for the special election. On Thursday, July 24, Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett provided a timeline for the election.
The key dates are listed below:
- Primary Election (for Democrats and Republicans): Oct. 7, 2025
- General Election: Dec. 2, 2025
Meanwhile, key dates were also released for candidates who are running or seeking to run in the race:
- Qualifying deadline (to turn paperwork in to run): Aug. 12, 2025
- Deadline to withdraw from the race: Aug. 15, 2025 at 12 p.m.
Officials stated those planning to qualify in the election must meet the following requirements: Have been a Tennessee resident for the past 3 years and have been a resident in the county represented for one year, immediately preceding the election.
Those wishing to vote in the primary must register by Sept. 8. In addition, those planning to vote in the general election should register by Nov. 3. To check your registration status, follow this link.
