CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man who served eight years in prison for multiple charges, including statutory rape by an authority figure, is back behind bars after he allegedly removed his court-mandated ankle monitor.
News 2 has covered a previous arrest involving Larry Wayne Dunn. Officials said the 48-year-old was still on probation with the courts and was mandated to wear a GPS ankle monitor.
According to documents from the Cheatham County Court, authorities received an alert that the GPS monitor had been removed on May 4. Dunn reportedly used nail clippers to cut off the monitor's strap .
The tag's tracker and strap were recovered in a wooded area but other components of the system were not found, deputies said. The equipment, which belongs to the Department of Correction, is reportedly worth $800.
Deputies told News 2 they worked to find Dunn, adding they even checked an abandoned home before calling the 48-year-old's probation officer.
Law enforcement and the probation officer allegedly worked to together to get Dunn to show up at a market, where he was then taken into custody.
As Dunn was being placed into handcuffs, deputies said they found a turtle in his hand. The animal was carefully removed and later placed into a quiet place near the woods.
After the arrest, bodycam video captured the deputies laughing about the unusual arrest.
"I was like 'drop the turtle,'" said one deputy. "And you were like, 'take the turtle,' what if that was his emotional support turtle?"
However, this is not the first time Larry Dunn has been the focus of a News 2 report. In April 2024, the 48-year-old was arrested following a shots fired incident.
During last year's arrest, law enforcement reportedly informed Dunn that he had been out of jail for almost a year and had 48 hours to register as a sex offender, which he failed to do so.
Currently, Dunn is being held in the Cheatham County Jail facing several charges, including violation of probation, vandalism over $1,000 and intentional tampering or removal of an ankle monitor device, which is also a felony charge.
