CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - At a rally on Thursday, firefighters and other advocates gathered to fight for higher pay.
Jesse Snyder, the president of the Clarksville Firefighter Association, says they're not asking for much, just a livable wage. He says some of the firefighters in their association have to work second and third jobs just to make ends meet.
On average, Snyder says a beginner, certified firefighter makes $45,000. The cities surrounding Clarksville make $10-12,000 more.
Snyder says this is making their retention rate really low, and it's hard to keep fire stations fully staffed.
He said the goal of the rally is to foster the relationship between firefighters and the city council.
"I think they're more aware of what's happening and how much of a need it is. Hopefully, we can continue that relationship and work towards something and put it together for the future of these firefighters," Snyder said.
In response, the city sent a statement saying, "We have no comment at this time, as the proposed City budget for the new fiscal year is amid review and discussion by the City Council."
