CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Austin Peay State University will cover tuition for some military spouses as the federal government shutdown continues.
In a Thursday announcement, the university said it was expanding on its previous commitment to cover tuition for military students enrolled in courses. The move comes as Senate Democrats failed to pass a bill to pay active-duty members of the military, according to reporting from News 2's partner The Hill.
APSU added that the Department of War's My Career Advancement Account program has experienced some delays in processing tuition approvals, meaning that some military spouses have been uncertain about their ability to continue their fall coursework.
"Austin Peay State University has always stood shoulder to shoulder with our military families," APSU President Mike Licari said. "We will not allow our students' educational progress to be derailed. Military spouses sacrifice alongside their service members, and we're committed to ensuring they can continue building their futures."
Earlier this month, APSU announced that it would start accepting military-to-degree equivalency for staff positions. In that announcement, APSU called itself the state’s number one provider of higher education for students with military affiliations. Students with military affiliations make up about 32% of APSU’s student body.
"Our military-affiliated students are the backbone of this institution, and their families are part of our APSU community," retired Maj. Gen. Walt Lord, APSU Vice President for Military and Veterans Affairs, said. "Whether you're an active duty soldier at Fort Campbell or a military spouse balancing education with family responsibilities, Austin Peay will ensure you can complete your coursework this semester. Uncertainty is constant in military life, but your university's support shouldn't be uncertain."
If you're a military spouse whose MyCAA funding has been affected, you can email APSU, call them at 931-221-7958 or visit this website.
