NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Labor Day weekend travel is bringing extra traffic through Middle Tennessee, and with it, some drivers said they’re seeing more dangerous behavior on the roads.
Residents and visitors have noticed an increase in road rage and traffic incidents, especially along busy stretches like Interstate 24.
“Seeing a lot more tourists than before, a lot more hotels, restaurants being built -- a lot of good things for the economy,” said Mark Ely, who lives in the Nashville area. "...But, you know, some people...when something little happens, they go off the deep end.”
Visitors Sarah and Chris Schwartz said they witnessed multiple incidents on the road.
“A lot of road rage,” Chris said.
“Seeing a lot of people pulling off to the side of the road, breaking down, and some car accidents and stuff, so it’s been pretty busy and a lot of traffic,” another woman told News 2.
These concerns were shared just days after the La Vergne Police Department reported a road rage case where suspects threw eggs and robbed a driver at gunpoint along I-24.
The American Automobile Association said Nashville continues to be one of the top destinations in the country for holiday travel, ranking in the top 10 places people want to visit. AAA reported a 9% increase in travel over Labor Day weekend in 2024 and expects similar numbers this year.
That means traffic is not expected to ease anytime soon. Ely offered the following advice for drivers: “Just put your seatbelt on and keep your cool.”
