Description
(KTLA/WKRN) – Threats ranging from public health and natural disasters to financial harm are among the many factors Americans face when they consider moving to a different city.
To determine where people can feel the most secure, WalletHub compared more than 180 cities across 41 key indicators of safety, including the number of mass shootings, thefts per capita and the number of law enforcement employees.
“When people think about safety in a city, their minds probably immediately go to things like the crime rate, auto fatality rate, or risk of natural disasters,” Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst, said in a statement. “The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety. Financial safety includes things like minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured, and combating homelessness.”
According to the study, these U.S. cities are the safest in America:
- Warwick, RI
- Overland Park, KS
- Burlington, VT
- Juneau, AK
- Yonkers, NY
- Casper, WY
- South Burlington, VT
- Columbia, MD
- Lewiston, ME
- Salem, OR
What set Warwick apart from the other 181 cities was a relatively low risk of natural disasters such as hail (seventh), wildfires (10th), tornadoes (23rd) and earthquakes (29th); low crime rates – third-lowest for aggravated assaults and seventh-lowest for thefts; low amount of residents living in poverty (fourth lowest); and a low percentage of people without health insurance (fourth lowest).
The top 10 least safe cities in the U.S. are:
- New Orleans, LA
- Memphis, TN
- Baton Rouge, LA
- Detroit, MI
- Baltimore, MD
- Fort Lauderdale, FL
- Houston, TX
- San Bernardino, CA
- Philadelphia, PA
- Cleveland, OH
Memphis has the dubious distinction of leading all others in homicides, recording 40.6 per 100,000 residents, according to the most recent FBI data.
In addition, based on WalletHub's data, Memphis has the lowest percentage of households with emergency savings (half as many as Wichita, Kansas, which has the highest percentage); is tied with Little Rock, Arkansas, and Detroit for the most assaults per capita (52 times as many as Virginia Beach, Virginia, which has the fewest); and is tied with at least four cities, including Knoxville, for the most traffic fatalities per capita (69 times as many as Santa Rosa, California, which has the fewest).
Several other Tennessee cities were listed among the more dangerous localities. For example, Chattanooga was ranked the 16th least safe city among those studied, followed by Nashville at No. 17 and Knoxville at No. 57.
Only two Kentucky cities were featured in WalletHub's list. Louisville was ranked the 34th most dangerous city, but Lexington-Fayette fell right near middle at 93rd most dangerous (or 90th least dangerous, if you prefer).
