TROUSDALE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A dozen inmates were indicted Monday by the Trousdale County Grand Jury for their role in the uprising that took place at Trousdale Turner Correctional Facility earlier this month.
Officials said the inmates face multiple charges such as aggravated riot, inciting a riot, robbery, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, vandalism and contraband in a penal institution. Their identifies have not been released at this time.
More indictments are expected to be announced as the Tennessee Department of Correction and investigators continue to review video footage.
Additionally, the Trousdale County Grand Jury returned 29 indictments for separate incidents at the prison. Those charges include contraband in a penal institution, attempted murder, aggravated assault, vandalism and indecent exposure by inmates to staff.
In one indictment, a staff member was charged with bringing drugs into the facility and official misconduct.
The riot was reported around 10 p.m. on June 8 while inmates were on lockdown. Trousdale County Sheriff Ray Russell said three guards were locked in the building and held hostage by inmates.
According to the sheriff's department, around 100 inmates were reportedly released into the prison yard, but none breached the outer perimeter.
Deputies and the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) entered the building and worked for two hours to deploy tear gas and contain the inmates in cells. The guards were successfully freed without the involvement of weapons, officials said. CoreCivic reported that all inmates were contained around 1 a.m. June 9.
Officials said multiple guards were taken to the hospital, and three inmates were treated for minor injuries.
No additional information was immediately released.
