CLARKSVILLE, TENN. (WKRN) — A woman reportedly hit a police sergeant conducting traffic control on Saturday morning during the Clarksville Half Marathon.
According to the Clarksville Police Department, Sgt. Joel Gibbons was working a traffic control at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the intersection of University Avenue and Franklin Street. As runners approached the intersection, Gibbons reportedly stopped vehicle traffic to allow runners to pass through.
Authorities said 22-year-old Zoie Gaines was in a parking lot across from University Landing and was trying to exit onto Franklin Street. Gaines was reportedly instructed to stop and paused, but then accelerated forward and hit Gibbons, which caused him to land on the hood of the vehicle she was driving.
According to the CPD, Gaines tried to flee the scene by putting the vehicle in reverse.
Gibbons and CPD Officer Robinson chased after the vehicle and repeatedly commanded Gaines to stop the vehicle, officials said.
Gaines eventually complied, but resisted both officers when they were taking her into custody. She reportedly bit Robinson on the finger.
Gaines was taken to the Montgomery County Jail. She is now facing the following charges: aggravated assault against a first responder, assault against a first responder, evading arrest in a vehicle and two counts of resisting arrest.
Authorities reported that Gaines' bond has been set at $50,000.
According to the CPD, Gibbons and Robinson were treated at the scene by Montgomery County EMS and did not need further medical attention.
