Description
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A powerful storm system swept through Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky Tuesday, bringing flooding rain, massive hailstones, tornadoes and damaging wind gusts.
The National Weather Service compiled a list of the highest wind gusts recorded at area airports. According to their data, the strongest wind gust was recorded in Crossville at 48 mph.
None of the wind gusts met severe criteria, however, many areas were under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning on Tuesday.
A severe thunderstorm is a thunderstorm that causes damage, and there are criteria set by the NWS to determine whether a thunderstorm is severe. If a thunderstorm produces a tornado, a hailstone over 1 inch in diameter, or a wind gust over 58 mph, it is severe.
Although the winds recorded from the NWS were not severe, there were dozens of reports of wind damage across Middle Tennessee.

However, even though there were no severe wind gusts recorded, that doesn't mean there were no severe winds. Tuesday's strongest winds just happened to miss the NWS's weather stations.
