Description
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — What kind of activities are fun for you? Whether the answer is hiking or watching a film or something in between, there are certain states that offer such a wide variety of entertainment options that everyone can find something enjoyable.
WalletHub compared all 50 states across "26 key indicators of a jolly good time that won't break the bank" in order to identify the "most fun states" in the U.S.
Those indicators were divided into two main categories: entertainment and recreation, and nightlife. The former had a wider range of metrics — such as restaurants, golf courses, beaches, state fairs, and national parks, to name a few — while the latter focused on elements like alcohol prices, music festivals, and casinos.
Tennessee ranked 20th overall on the list, 22nd in entertainment and recreation, and 20th in nightlife. The Volunteer State's availability of amenities that helped determine those rankings mostly fell in the middle range, according to WalletHub:
- 19th for restaurants per capita
- 21st for movie theaters per capita
- 30th for golf courses and country clubs per capita
- 12th for amusement parks per capita
- 28th for performing arts theaters per capita
- 19th for fitness centers per capita
- 22nd for access to national parks
- 9th for variety of arts, entertainment, and recreation establishments
As for Kentucky, the Bluegrass State was No. 38 for its overall rank and its entertainment and recreation rank, but it was No. 31 for its nightlife rank.
Fun fact (or rather not-so-fun fact considering its negative contribution for the entertainment and recreation rank): Kentucky had the fifth lowest state and local expenditures on parks and recreation per capita, WalletHub.
Kentucky also had the fewest skiing facilities per capita, followed by Florida, Virginia, and Tennessee. Meanwhile, the best state in that section of the study, Vermont, had 34 times as many skiing facilities per capita as Kentucky.
