Description
CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A man wanted for domestic violence charges out of Indiana was taken into custody at a Middle Tennessee house last week.
According to court documents, 39-year-old Martez D. Bell had active warrants for strangulation, confinement, domestic battery, and battery (bodily injury) from Marion County, Indiana.
Capt. Chris Gilmore with the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office said his deputies and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) -- who were involved because Bell allegedly used a gun during the crimes in Indiana -- had been looking for Bell for several days.
News 2 obtained body camera video showing the SWAT team arriving at the scene and taking up positions outside the house around 1:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 22.
At Gilmore's urging, a deputy used a patrol vehicle's speaker system to broadcast a series of warnings across the front yard for the suspect to surrender.
"This is Cheatham County Sheriff's Office. Anyone in the residence, I need you to come out with your hands up now -- do it now," the deputy instructed over the speaker. "We know you're in there; we've seen movement. Person laying in the bed, with the spotlight on you, get up out of the bed now."
After numerous unsuccessful attempts to convince the suspect to exit the house, authorities deployed a flash bang device. When it was ignited, the trees illuminated while a loud, concussive sound echoed around the area.
"Just a distraction device, it was thrown outside one of the bedroom windows. We knew that the people were in that room," Gilmore explained. "We'd seen them moving and the lights were on prior to us pulling up in the driveway with all of our lights on and starting to announce who we were and why we were there, and they immediately shut all the lights off on the house and pretended they weren't home. That device was able to convince them that they needed to start coming out or we were going to start coming in."
After several more minutes, the video shows Bell being walked up the front lawn in handcuffs.
Once he was in custody, Bell spoke calmly and at length with law enforcement. Much of the conversation can be heard in the footage from the patrol vehicle.
"Did you think the federal agents come because of the gun, or you don't know?" Bell asked.
"You know what I learned from all this? You can't put your heart and everything and believe people," he continued. "They show you their true colors the first time, you should understand that and continue not to believe that they're going to be something that they are."
Bell later said he didn't have a gun and he knew he had pending charges in Indiana. He added that he isn't a bad guy, just that he made bad decisions.
"This ain't the first time that this girl's got me in trouble," Bell said.
"Just the cooperation of working together -- whenever you break the law, we will do what we need to do to try to take you into custody," Gilmore added.
Officials confirmed Indiana authorities picked the suspect up at the Cheatham County Jail and transported him back to the Hoosier State to face charges.
Investigators told News 2 that no weapon was located and nobody at the Cheatham County house was charged with any crimes.
