BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WKRN) — A veteran Brentwood police officer is getting some major props after he ran down not one, but two wanted suspects at a popular shopping center over the weekend.
The incident reportedly took place at the Brentwood Place shopping center on Sunday, Sept. 14. Investigators told News 2 that an LPR camera alerted officers to a stolen vehicle out of Nashville that entered the city. Law enforcement later found the unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot of the shopping center.
"They did a few things to keep it from fleeing, like putting spike strips behind the tires, and then just watched it," said Brentwood Police Captain Steve Pepin.
Then, when 35-year-old Sarah Steward exited a store, officers reportedly moved in. According to investigators, the Nashville woman, who has more than 24 criminal warrants out of Metro, left a high-end store with a bag full of stolen merchandise.
Bodycam video obtained by New 2 shows the moment Sgt. Billy Townsend, a 10-year veteran of the force, chased the woman after she turned and ran away.
Minutes later, Townsend found a second suspect, identified as 44-year-old Tyrone Eric Jenkins. Court documents show Jenkins is an ex-con with a 20-year arrest history, which includes drugs, weapons and sex trafficking.
As seen on video, Townsend attempted to get the 44-year-old to surrender, but Jenkins kept moving away.
According to Pepin, Sgt. Townsend was able to run down both suspects within 10 minutes.
"What would you say to the officer" asked News 2's Andy Cordan.
"Great job. You did a great job, you represented Brentwood well," replied Pepin.
In addition, Pepin described it as just another day for the hardworking men and women of the Brentwood Police Department.
"This is stuff these officers do every day. I know you see a great story, but this is something they do every day," he said. "It's a huge team effort. I know you had one officer in two foot pursuits, but without the other officers, this could've turned out a lot different, so great team effort and great police work."
According to Pepin, the bag of stolen merchandise was returned to the store and a felony amount of cocaine was found in the stolen car.
Jenkins is reportedly awaiting trial on two felonies that involve drugs and being a felon in possession of a firearm. When told about the arrest in Brentwood, the Metro assistant district attorney handling the 44-year-old's current criminal case said she is moving to revoke his bond, stating, "I think he's dangerous. My offer has been a lengthy sentence to serve, hence, why it's set for trial."
The Williamson County Sheriff's Office told News 2 that Steward was charged with three counts of theft of property and evading arrest. She is reportedly being held in the Williamson County Jail on a $7,500 bond.
Meanwhile, Jenkins faces a slew of charges, including the manufacture, sale and delivery of cocaine, theft of property over $2,500, evading arrest, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remains jailed on a $34,000 bond.
Officials added that Jenkins also has probation violations that stem back to previous charges of tampering with evidence, promoting prostitution and trafficking for commercial sex acts.
