Description
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Tennessee Highway Patrol will be watching roads across the state over Memorial Day weekend as we kick off the summer travel season.
Troopers will be stationed on patrols, checkpoints and seat belt enforcements from Friday, May 23 through Monday, May 26.
According to the American Automobile Association, 45.1 million Americans are projected to travel at least 50 miles over traveling over the holiday period, which would break the previous record of 44 million people set back in 2005.
AAA predicts the number of travelers will increase by 1.4 million this year, with a total of 39.4 million people expected to travel by vehicle, 3.6 million by plane, and 2.1 million by alternative modes of transportation.
THP officials said they want everyone to be safe, so that means they'll be looking out for people who are driving over the speed limit or driving under the influence.
“Our troopers are working long hours this Memorial Day weekend,” THP Col. Matt Perry said. “We’re watching for speeding, impaired drivers, and those not buckled up because visibility saves lives.”
Even though THP will be out in full force for the next few days, authorities said they still want Tennesseans to enjoy the holiday weekend safely with family.
