Description

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Summer is almost here, and that means we are seeing our longest days of the year! May 2 through August 9 are the 100 longest days of the year in Tennessee.

May 2 and August 9 have 13 hours and 42 minutes of daylight. The Summer Solstice has 14 hours and 37 minutes of daylight in Nashville. That means we will see nearly an additional hour of daylight added between now and June 20.

We have entered our longest 100 days of the year, but we haven't made it to the warmest 100 days yet. According to data collected at Nashville International Airport, the top 100 warmest days stretch from June 4 until September 12.

From June 4 through September 12, Nashville's average high temperature is more than 85°F. Music City's highest average high temperature is 91°, from July 14 through August 6.

So why aren't the longest 100 days of the year the same as the warmest 100 days?

The longest 100 days occur earlier in the year than the warmest 100 days because of seasonal lag. This is why the warmest time of year occurs after the Summer Solstice and why the coldest temperatures of the year occur well after the Winter Solstice.

Seasonal lag is caused by the amount of energy needed to heat and cool the oceans. Water covers more than 70% of Earth, and all that water takes a long time to heat up and cool down. Use a local lake, for example, we can have several days in the 80s during March, and the water temperatures will still be too cold to swim. It takes much more energy to change the temperature of water than air or even the ground.
