SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — In light of an expected slowdown in both electric vehicle industry growth and customer demand, "General Motors is making strategic adjustments to electric vehicle production."
Reuters has reported that the plant will stop production of two electric Cadillac models. In a statement to News 2, a spokesperson for the Spring Hill GM plant said they would "continue to evaluate and adjust operations based on the market and customer demand. "
"The demand just doesn't appear to be as strong as they had hoped," Dr. Steven Sprick Schuster, an economics professor at Middle Tennessee State University, said.
Sprick Schuster believes the perception of electric vehicles and charging structures across the U.S. hasn't helped boost customer demand. He explained that he's from a rural community and EVs have seemingly not become popular there.
"I think it's going to be a longer horizon than maybe what they're hoping," Sprick Schuster said. "I think they are hoping that by 2028, 2029 this will start to happen. I grew up in a rural area, and my read on people's appetite for an electric truck is just low."
"GM's U.S. manufacturing footprint remains our strength, and we are in the process of investing nearly $5 billion over the next two years to further increase domestic vehicle production, enabling the ability to assemble more than two million vehicles per year in the U.S. " a statement from a spokesperson for the Spring Hill GM plant to News 2 reads, in part. "Additionally, the recent decision to allocate Chevrolet Blazer production to Spring Hill beginning in 2027 emphasizes the strong future for the facility. "
