BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WKRN) — Alex Lim is one of the best table tennis coaches around, but he doesn't just teach table tennis. Lim teaches confidence.
"I've been playing it most of my life," Lim said. "...Anybody can excel and enjoy this sport."
Lim is one of many regulars who play at the Indoor Sports Complex in Brentwood as part of a program that's been around for more than 20 years.
"We'll see 30+ people inside here that come shuffle in and out throughout the day," facility manager Jack Aide said.
On these tables, skill has no limit and there are no age requirements.
"It's easy to learn and easy to play," Lim said.
Elise Borisov, 9, is one of the best of bunch. Borisov's family is from Russia, but uses ping-pong a universal language. News 2 asked her about her favorite thing when playing.
"Probably when I hit hard," Borisov said, smiling.
The sport also serves up major health benefits. A 2024 study published in Brain Research suggested that playing table tennis could brain connectivity and cognitive function.
"It's kind of a very fast game and forces you to concentrate and to have a good hand-eye coordination," table tennis coordinator Mena Sergeyous said.
Because in table tennis, no one loses.
"They get into it, they play, they sweat, they exercise," Lim said. "At the end of the day, they say 'Whoo! That was great!'"
