Description
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man arrested more than 100 times for panhandling was arrested Wednesday for evading arrest by running across Interstate 24.
The incident happened on Saturday, Aug. 23 at the I-24 off ramp to Old Hickory Boulevard near the Rutherford County line.
According to court documents, officers were called to help after someone called 911 to report a man flagging down motorists and telling them his wife was having a medical episode parked on the side of the interstate.
Responding officers noted the man was likely 58-year-old Paul Aniel, who has been arrested in Nashville for panhandling in this manner more than 100 times.
When officers approached Aniel, he reportedly ran onto the interstate, crossing both west and eastbound lanes, which caused multiple motorists to swerve and slam on their brakes, according to Metro police.
Aniel then tried to open the door of a vehicle that had stopped during the incident, but the door was locked and the driver sped away. Eventually, Aniel was taken into custody in the median of the interstate.
Aniel was booked into the Metro jail and charged with disorderly conduct, evading arrest, reckless endangerment and failure to appear. He remains jailed on a $28,000 bond.
