NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A mother has been jailed for multiple counts of homicide in connection with a head-on crash in West Nashville last week that led to the death of one of her children.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said 35-year-old Karlisha Norwood was driving a 2011 Nissan Sentra around 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16 when she was involved in a crash on Harding Pike near Percy Warner Boulevard.
Authorities added that she had been "weaving in and out of traffic" while traveling east before crossing into the westbound lanes and colliding with a pickup truck.
The pickup truck driver was reportedly treated and released.
However, Karlisha's daughter, 3-year-old Kaylie Norwood, and son — who turned 3 on Friday, July 18 — were in the Sentra at the time of the crash, officials said. Both were taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt with life-threatening injuries while Karlisha was brought to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Kaylie, who would have turned 4 in September, died from her injuries on Sunday, July 20, according to police. Meanwhile, Karlisha's son is still recovering in the hospital.
Law enforcement said Karlisha told investigators she had taken prescription medication before the crash occurred.
On Friday, July 25, the MNPD announced Karlisha had been released from the hospital and charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication, criminal homicide, child endangerment, aggravated child abuse, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence and driving without insurance. As of publication, she is being held on a $285,000 bond.
