LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Immigration policy and its effect on La Vergne are set to be discussed Wednesday evening at a town hall meeting with the La Vergne Police Department.
According to La Vergne Police Chief Christopher Moews, LVPD had no involvement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In fact, ICE officials have not even told the department about their activity in La Vergne.
Moews said LVPD is required by law to assist ICE if the agency requests it. However, Metro Nashville Police Department officials told News 2 that they're not legally required to help ICE.
"One of our officers actually saw a THP squad pull an individual over. Our officer simply pulled in the gas station lot, they gave him a thumbs up, then he drove out," Moews said. "He was on our computer automated dispatch record for less than a minute being out on the traffic stop that turned out to be one of those initiatives."
In terms of notifying LVPD about ICE activity, Moews told News 2 neither he nor the department received a courtesy call. He has spoken with federal authorities about being notified prior to any activity.
The town hall meeting with LVPD is set to take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21 in the La Vergne Community Church at 375 Old Nashville Highway.
