NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Neighbors in Antioch have prepared to fight a rezoning plan that could put townhouses in their backyards.

The plan, as outlined by the Metro Planning Commission, aims to rezone the area for single-family residents and incorporate multi-family units. Those units would go in the nearly four acres of private greenspace behind the homes off of Maxwell Road, making way for a new townhouse development.

But neighbors are fighting this rezoning proposal.

"It's getting a lot more crowded," Antioch resident Susan Schellhardt expressed. "We have a lot of traffic on this street."

Longtime residents told News 2 that the area is already struggling with traffic, school crowding and infrastructure that would not be able to support 40 townhouses in their neighborhood.

"The main road down there, Maxwell, just isn't really wide enough to support any more homes," Schellhardt said. "We don't need any more homes down here."

They say if construction were to move forward, it would wipe out the 3.8 acres of green space- just feet away from some neighbors' houses.

"I still like the seeing the occasional wildlife, and that will be completely destroyed," Antioch resident Dawn Daniel said. "There's just too much in too small of an area."

Neighbors also said that construction would likely bring noise and potential structural damage to nearby houses.

"I'm not happy," Schellhardt said. "Noise — you know, all of the blasting and all of that stuff, it just doesn't — to me, it's just not worth it."

"I mean, with the growth, you have the good, you also have the bad," Daniel said. "We are a little concerned that the bad right now is outweighing some of the good on this just for a multitude of reasons."

For the residents who can't or don't want to move, they plan to fight and keep the zoning as is at Thursday's planning meeting.

"I have several letters from people who live around the area, and I also have people that are going with us to counteract this," Daniel said. "There's tons of land around that can accommodate that many homes, but I don't think this is the area."

The meeting has been scheduled at the Metro Planning Commission for Thursday, June 12, at 4 p.m. News 2 reached out to the developer for comment but, at the time of this publication, had yet to hear back.
