'I want a copy of it': Mt. Juliet leaders call for transparency amid TBI investigation into IT department

Description

MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WKRN) — For the first time, leaders in Mt. Juliet are speaking publicly about a TBI investigation involving the city's IT department.

“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but I want a copy of that report and I’m making that request publicly right now,” said District 3 Commissioner Scott Hefner.

News 2 previously reported that two employees were fired from Mt. Juliet's IT department amid an ongoing investigation, including IT Director Travis Taylor.

“Two people have been fired, departments heads have been fired. People want to know, they owe it to them for that,” said Rocky Lee, the former Mt. Juliet parks director.

Lee worked for the city of Mt. Juliet for 25 years, more than half of those years were as the park's director. However, he resigned earlier this year.

"A lot of voters, a lot of citizens have been reaching out since I've been gone, a lot of those questions have been on transparency,” he added.

According to a post made by the city of Mt. Juliet, Taylor celebrated 15 years of service back in 2023. Then, in July 2025, he was praised for his work by the city.

However, officials confirmed on Tuesday, Oct. 21, that the city had "separated employment with two employees from the IT Department, including IT Director Travis Taylor." Meanwhile, details regarding why Taylor and the other employee were fired remain under wraps.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said they received a request from District Attorney General Jason Lawson to investigate allegations involving employees of the IT department. As of publication, city officials have not gone on record to speak on what the allegations were.

“There is people that imply there is a cover up going on in this city; in fact, it's quite opposite. The city was notified, the city investigated, the city took the appropriate actions, got an outside entity at the request of the our district attorney, to look into this," said Mt. Juliet Mayor James Maness.

Several leaders say they look forward to reading the investigative report once it's complete.

“When that TBI report is completed to the extent where I can have access to that report, I want a copy of it,” Hefner said.

“I do have questions on that, which I will be asking once that's complete,” added Mt. Juliet Commissioner Jennifer Milele.

News 2's Kendall Ashman reached out to the TBI to see when they anticipate the report to be complete, but the TBI responded that they have no new information to share at this time.
