I-65 Crash Leaves Driver Seriously Injured Monday

CROSS PLAINS, TENNESSEE: (Sm0key Barn News)  A serious crash on I-65 in Robertson County left a young man hospitalized with serious injuries. This will be an update to a crash report we brought you yesterday. The crash occurred near the Guthrie Road overpass when the vehicle left the interstate “rolling end over end” before landing on Rock House Road, adjacent to the Cross Plains Quarry, the first call coming into 911 at 1:32 pm Monday. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 2:00 p.m. near the Guthrie Road overpass. THP reports the vehicle was traveling southbound on I-65 near the 118.6 mile marker when it left the roadway to the right and traveled down an earth embankment. The vehicle then continued south down a second embankment, where it struck a standing tree.

Troopers say the vehicle began to roll and became airborne before crashing into another embankment and continuing to roll multiple times while still traveling south. The vehicle then struck a chain-link fence before coming to an uncontrolled final rest on its wheels, facing north, in a grassy field near South Rock House Road.

Officials say the driver, now identified as 20-year-old John Mark McElroy, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital. As of 7:22 p.m. Tuesday, McElroy remained hospitalized in serious condition.

A LifeFlight helicopter landed at the nearby quarry, where quarry staff watered down the area to reduce dust to allow for a safe landing, according to Cross Plains Fire Chief Tommy Jackson.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced at this time.  The crash did not impact traffic on I-65.
