FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Franklin Fire Department has opened some friendly competition among Williamson County kids as part of Fire Prevention Week.
Students between Kindergarten and eighth grade have been asked to design a new fire helmet shield for the fire department's mascot Sparky. Jamie Melton, Fire & Life Safety Educator for the Franklin Fire Department, said the they're specifically focusing on this age range so that young people can become more aware of lithium-ion battery safety.
When not used correctly, those batteries can overheat and catch fire, so officials are looking for the best artist who captures this year's theme: “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium Batteries in Your Home.”
"We're really trying to educate people on lithium-ion battery safety in a fun way and get the kids involved,” Melton said. “Of course kids are using those devices, too, and charging them — and we want everyone to be safe.”
The grand prize winner will receive a $100 Visa gift card and they'll have their artwork displayed at Franklin's Fire Station 8 in Westhaven for a year. The winner's artwork will be made into a custom fire helmet shield to be worn by the departments mascot. Nine first-place winners will receive a $50 visa gift card. Franklin officials will award one winner per grade.
Entries are open now until October 26, 2025. Applicants will have to complete an entry form and follow contest guidelines.
