NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As summer slips by and we move toward autumn, some have already begun preparations for Halloween.

That's the case with East Nashville homeowner Peter Greaves.

Each year, Greaves sets up a large Halloween display in his front yard. Starting at the end of September, he begins the process of setting up and arranging more than a dozen skeleton figures in multiple sizes around his lawn, bringing an element of whimsy to his neighborhood.

"It was just a fun thing to do," he told News 2. "I used to live out in Wilson County in the middle of nowhere, and there was no point in setting up [for] Halloween, because kids didn't come around. When we moved to East Nashville, one of the great things about it is you actually get trick-or-treaters."

When he first started setting things up, Greaves said it quickly became a favorite feature of the neighborhood, so he kept adding to it each year.

"Parents would bring their kids around every day to see what was new," he told News 2.

For the last few years, the display has seen his skellies dressed up as healthcare workers—a COVID-era theme during the height of the pandemic—characters from 1980s classic films and even dead rock stars like Freddie Mercury and Jimi Hendrix.

Greaves said it takes about a full weekend to set up the display each year, but he continues adjusting things until the day before Halloween.

He's not alone in celebrating the fun in a holiday, according to Greaves. His whole block also enjoys indulging in decorations for the holidays, including Halloween and Christmas.

"We've had some folks who have done some pretty decent stuff around here," he told News 2. "Our neighbors across the road in particular—we'll work with them sometimes and set up a common or joint theme."

This year, Greaves told News 2 his theme will be pirates, and he's looking for help in creating the tableau-worthy display.

He posted a call in a local neighborhood Facebook group, and so far he's had multiple people reach out and offer to be on the lookout for things that will help elevate his spooky scene. People have responded positively, according to Greaves, and he's excited to see the feedback from neighbors and other East Nashvillians.

"It's nice to know you're not wasting your time," he said of the positive response.

That enjoyment is what Greaves finds the most rewarding about the display, he told News 2.

"We literally will have people driving down the road, drive past the house, slam on the brakes, and reverse back up and get out and take further photographs," he said. "We've met lots and lots of people just from standing outside. It's great."

One of the funnier things about his display, he admitted, is the six-foot-long inflatable cat with a turning head.

"The neighborhood dogs are terrified of it," Greaves told News 2.

To see the display this year, head on over to the 900 block of Fatherland Street at the beginning of October.
