Description
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Twenty-seven years ago, Middle Tennessee was impacted by one of the worst tornado outbreaks in history.
On April 16, 1998, 13 tornadoes touched down, including the strongest ever in Middle Tennessee — known as "The Forgotten F-5."
Several tornadoes impacted the Nashville area, including an F-3 that caused damage to skyscrapers and Nissan Stadium, which was under construction at the time.

The tornadoes that impacted Nashville are why the F-5 tornado that affected Wayne and Lawrence counties is called "The Forgotten F-5." All the attention was on Nashville, even though the strongest tornado in Middle Tennessee's history impacted areas to the south.
Despite the tornado's strength, there were no fatalities, according to the National Weather Service. However, at least 21 were injured by the historic twister.
The tornado was rated an F-5, meaning it had winds of more than 261 mph. The new scale that the NWS uses is known as the Enhanced Fujita Scale, and it would be classified as an EF-5 today. An EF-5 is a tornado that has winds of more than 200 mph.
In total, the 13 tornadoes resulted in four fatalities and 99 injuries.
