MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new Wawa gas station will soon break ground in Murfreesboro, and it's just the latest of multiple big names that have decided to open shop in the city.
Next Tuesday, Wawa will break ground in Murfreesboro, which will be followed by another location breaking ground on Wednesday in Clarksville.
"It's always great when national brands are looking at Murfreesboro; it shows that we're on the map of companies wanting to move to the area," Murfreesboro City Councilmember Shawn Wright said.
Brands like Whataburger, Raising Cane's and Trader Joe's have already opened storefronts in Murfreesboro. Several other specialty brands are also in the pipeline.
"We've got the Buc-ee's going in; it's already broken ground," Wright said. "We've got other restaurants coming this way. We've always got big companies and small businesses, local owned businesses as well, opening and wanting to move to the area."
The Murfreesboro City Council has approved three site plans for Wawa locations in the city.
"We've got the college here; we've got a good work base," Wright added. "We are a thriving city, 175,000 [people] that are ready to go out and go to retail shops, go to restaurants, be out and about in the community."
According to the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, plans for an M.L.Rose in Murfreesboro are in the works, along with other sit-down dining options.
Wright said Buc-ee's is expected to open at the beginning of 2026, and the city is in talks with other new businesses he wasn't able to share details on.
"I can't talk about them yet, but there's some big news on the horizon," Wright said.
The Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce is especially focused on drawing new businesses to the Veterans Parkway area of Murfreesboro in addition to fast-growing areas of Smyrna and La Vergne.
