Description

GLASGOW, Ky. (WKRN) -- A young man was arrested Saturday for multiple charges -- including murder -- following a mid-October crash in Glasgow that left three teenagers dead and several other people injured.

According to the Glasgow Police Department, the incident was reported just after 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the intersection of Veterans Outer Loop and North Jackson Highway.

Authorities announced on Oct. 18 that the preliminary investigation revealed Asa Howard, 18, of Edmonton, was driving a 2016 Nissan Altima northbound on North Jackson Highway when he collided with a 2017 Toyota Highlander traveling eastbound on Veterans Outer Loop.

Officials said Barren/Metcalfe EMS transported Howard and an 18-year-old passenger from Glasgow to T.J. Samson Community Hospital before they were flown elsewhere due to their injuries. An injured 21-year-old passenger from Glasgow was also taken to T.J. Samson, but he was reportedly released later on.

However, three other passengers -- described by law enforcement as 18-year-old Emily Corbin of Hart County, a 14-year-old from Bowling Green, and a 17-year-old from Edmonton -- were pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota was brought to T.J. Samson in a personal vehicle while Hart County EMS transported another passenger to the same hospital, according to police. No additional details were shared about the nature of these individuals' injuries or their ages.

Glasgow Police Chief Guy K. Howie released a statement about the crash on Oct. 20, saying, in part, "Upon arrival, first responders were met with a scene of overwhelming destruction. The crash had resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries, and debris was scattered across all four lanes of the intersection. It was immediately clear that this was a tragic and critical incident requiring a multi agency response."

In addition to Glasgow officers, members of the Barren County Sheriff's Office, the Cave City Police Department, Kentucky State Police, Barren/Metcalfe EMS, Hart County EMS, the Glasgow Fire Department, the Barren/Metcalfe 911 Center, the Barren County Coroner, Barren County Emergency Management, and the Kentucky Department of Transportation provided assistance at the scene and with the investigation, authorities said.

"To all the men and women who responded that night—thank you. You placed yourselves in a difficult and emotional situation to serve and protect our community. I pray that none of you ever have to face a tragedy of this magnitude again in your careers," Howie said. "We know that each of you holds the families and survivors of this incident in your thoughts and prayers, just as we do."

Two weeks after the deadly collision, on Friday, Oct. 31, a Glasgow lieutenant obtained an arrest warrant for Howard. Officials said investigators determined the 18-year-old was driving at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the intersection when he hit the Toyota. Then, right after the crash, Howard allegedly left the scene on foot, came back, and was "manifestly under the influence of an intoxicating substance."

According to law enforcement, a Metcalfe County deputy took Howard into custody on Saturday, Nov. 1. He was charged with three counts of murder, one count of first-degree assault, and three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.

Police said they're still investigating this case. No additional details were released.
