COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man was shot and killed Sunday night as officers with the Cookeville Police Department attempted to serve a warrant, officials said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the incident took place shortly after 10:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of N. Willow Avenue on Sunday, June 8.
Authorities reported officers were in the area to serve a domestic assault warrant on 22-year-old Dawson McCracken. However, when they arrived, McCracken was reportedly armed with a handgun.
Officials said law enforcement attempted to negotiate with McCracken, but at some point, the situation escalated and the 22-year-old pulled out his gun, which resulted in officers firing several rounds toward him.
According to the TBI, McCracken was struck by the gunfire and officers rendered aid; however, the 22-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Meanwhile, no law enforcement personnel were injured in the incident.
"TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration," wrote the agency in a release about the deadly incident.
No additional details about the shooting were immediately released.
