Video from 2024: What words do Americans have the hardest time spelling?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Does it ever feel like kids and teens are speaking in a different language? Have you ever had to look up the latest slang used by Generation Alpha? You're not alone.

Word finding experts at Unscramblerer.com conducted research to determine which terms are the subjects of the most online searches across the country. A couple of them were even looked up more than 100,000 times in less than nine months.

A representative for Unscramblerer.com provided a list of the most searched for slang words in Tennessee, as well as definitions for them:

  1. "6-7": There is no literal meaning to this phrase, making it a prime example of "brainrot" internet humor where the randomness itself becomes funny. As reported by News 2's parent company, Nexstar, it originated from the 2024 song "Doot Doot (6 7)" by the rapper Skrilla, which was then used in fan-made videos of Charlotte Hornets player LaMelo Ball, who is 6-feet 7-inches tall. It's frequently said while alternating between lifting your hands, palms up, like a weighing or juggling motion.
  2. "Sybau": It's an acronym for "Shut your b---- a-- up."
  3. "Sigma": It refers to an independent person who operates outside traditional social hierarchies, someone who would be described as a lone wolf.
  4. "Chopped": This term serves as a synonym for something ugly, undesirable, or unattractive.
  5. "Huzz": This refers to an attractive girl or a group of girls you want to impress, serving as a replacement for "boo" and "pookie." This slang used to have a more derogatory meaning that sounds similar to the word.
  6. "PMO": Depending on the context, it means either "Put me on" -- a request to be introduced to something new -- or "Pisses me off."
  7. "Sendy": "Getting sendy" means going all in and pushing your limits. The term -- which originates from "send it" -- refers to committing to something and going for it. It can be used in various situations like confidence, food, and style.
  8. "41": It refers to absurdity humor without any real meaning, similar to "6-7." The term originated from rapper Blizzy Boy and became a viral meme.
  9. "Clanker": This is a derogatory term for robots and AI technology. For example, "having to talk to a clanker" would mean talking with a chatbot.
  10. "Dih": If you replace the "h" with a "ck," that's the meaning of this word. Since many social media algorithms prohibit profanity, users come up with "Algo speak" like "dih" to get around that.

According to Unscramblerer.com, several of the terms listed above were among the slang words looked up most frequently in the U.S.:

  1. "6-7" (141,000 searches)
  2. "Bop" (115,000 searches): It means an individual with many sexual partners, someone who "bops" around from person to person and presents oneself online in a way seen as immodest. This derogatory word is often used in cyberbullying.
  3. "Mogging" (79,000 searches): This term means outclassing someone else by appearing more attractive, skillful or successful. It has a similar definition to another trending slang word, "Looksmaxxing" (16,000 searches).
  4. "Huzz" (61,000 searches)
  5. "Chopped" (59,000 searches)
  6. "Big back" (57,000 searches): It refers to someone with a large physique who is seen as gluttonous or out of shape. However, it's less about literal size and more about mockery of certain behavior, like hogging food or being sluggish.
  7. "Glazing" (49,000 searches): This term means praising someone excessively and insincerely. It serves as a way to call out behavior where superfluous flattery is used.
  8. "Zesty" (44,000 searches): It refers to someone who is lively, exciting, or energetic.
  9. "Fanum tax" (36,000 searches): It means playfully taking a portion of a friend's food. A streamer named Fanum started this trend.
  10. "Green FN" (34,000 searches): This term refers to a guaranteed win or something amazing and highly desirable. It's often said after an exceptional shot or throw in basketball, which makes sense seeing as the slang originated from the NBA 2K video game series, where a perfectly timed shot is marked by the color green.
  11. "Delulu" (32,000 searches): It's short for "delusional" and used to describe someone with unrealistic expectations, especially about crushes, relationships, or fantasies (like thinking a celebrity will date them).
  12. "Clanker" (29,000 searches)
  13. "Ohio" (24,000 searches): No, we're not talking about the state. This term refers to anything strange or absurd.
  14. "Slop" (21,000 searches): This word describes low-effort content generated by artificial intelligence.
  15. "Aura farming" (18,000 searches): It refers to a behavior where someone does something for the sake of looking cool, often referencing anime characters.

An Unscramblerer.com spokesperson commented on the findings, saying, "Popular slang in 2025 continues to be heavily influenced by TikTok, Instagram, gaming, streaming, Gen Z and Alpha online communities. Trends from social media spread rapidly via memes and viral challenges. Fueled by technology our language adapts to new slang trends more rapidly than ever. Slang is a fascinating and fun mirror of our culture."

Unscramblerer.com reportedly analyzed search data from Google Trends between Jan. 1 and Sept. 19 to discover the top trending slang words and used Ahrefs to find the number of searches.
