FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — A trailblazing Kentucky woman and the Commonwealth's 56th governor passed away on Nov. 1, according to an announcement from Gov. Beshear.
"Gov. Collins was a powerhouse, transforming our commonwealth through major accomplishments like bringing Toyota to our state for its first U.S. site," Beshear wrote, "She created a foundation for us to build a strong future upon, and her legacy will continue to benefit Kentucky families for generations. She was a proud Kentuckian, and she will be greatly missed."
Born in the Shelby County community of Bagdad, Collins had been a teacher, county clerk, a businesswoman, and the secretary of Kentucky's Democratic Party before her election as lieutenant governor under John Y. Brown Junior in 1979 and her victory over Jim Bunning to become governor in 1983. USA Today had called her a “true pioneer.”
Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote that the former governor was known for breaking barriers, a message echoed by the Kentucky GOP in an announcement on social media.

"As among the first women in our nation’s history to be elected governor in her own right, her leadership expanded what was possible for future generations," Senate GOP leaders wrote.
Former Gov. Steve Beshear, who served as Collins's lieutenant governor during her time as head of the Commonwealth, told FOX 56 News that he and his wife Jane were saddened to hear of her passing.
"I had the privilege of serving as lieutenant governor when she broke the glass ceiling to become Kentucky’s first female governor, and I saw firsthand her transformational efforts related to economic development, education and equine tourism," he said. "With Toyota, the Horse Park, and ongoing education reform, Kentuckians continue to benefit from her leadership. Our thoughts go out to Bill and their children."
