KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. (WKRN) — They say don’t mix business with pleasure, but for Lesley Mortimer-Wallace and her husband, Steve Orchard, that may be the greatest business model of all time.
"I’m the dreamer and he's the builder of my dreams," Mortimer-Wallace said.
Mortimer-Wallace is the visionary behind what's known as The Land. Orchard, a carpenter for the past 30 years, designed it all.
"Just make it up in your head, no drawings, and then when it's done, you're like, 'That's pretty cool,'" Orchard said.
There was no real blueprint. Plus, almost everything on The Land is salvaged and thrifted.
"I'd be like, 'I've seen this thing on [Facebook] Marketplace, it's free, it's 100 miles away,'" Mortimer-Wallace said.
But what all exists on The Land?
"Each little building is its own business, and so you’ll find they have different social media, different business hours, different staff, different teams," Mortimer-Wallace said.
That includes the well-known Yorkshire Deli that Mortimer-Wallace owns and operates -- which has walls from 100-year-old hog houses -- along with the garden, the nursery, and more.
"Collectively we all sort of come together and have created this family-friendly, wholesome, farm-foot-forward, agritourism space," Mortimer-Wallace said.
It's a mini destination, all fueled by partnerships throughout the community.
"This is the original partnership right there," Mortimer-Wallace said, gesturing toward her husband, "but truly, that's how we've been able to grow."
According to Mortimer-Wallace, it took a village for her dream to turn into a reality.
“We built this whole place with our bare hands -- like blood, sweat, and tears does not even cover it," Mortimer-Wallace said, with Orchard adding that it was done with very little budget.
"In the blink of an eye, it seems like," Orchard said, throwing his arms up in the air, "and there's hundreds of people here a day on the weekend."
Mortimer Wallace told News 2 their whole life is at The Land, saying it's where they live, breathe, work, sleep, and repeat.
